Creating reading spaces to encourage literacy and education among economically challenged youth.
MERCY Libraries Bring Light to a Community in Need
In the heart of Tondo, one of Metro Manila’s most densely populated and economically challenged districts, MERCY Libraries are transforming lives—one book, one story, one child at a time.
On June 7, 2024, MERCY Ambassadors from the Manila International Christian Church launched their first-ever school library at Antonio Luna Elementary School in Tondo, Caloocan City. Home to over 1,500 students, the school became the starting point of a dream to bring accessible learning and safe spaces to underserved children in Manila.
The day was filled with joy and wonder for 172 children. Led by 70 Ambassadors, the event included a spirited storytelling of The Three Little Pigs, guided campus tours with Sir Maurice, and high-energy games. Forty children received much-needed school supplies, but more than that, they received the gift of hope.
The highlight? The opening of a fully equipped library that now serves the entire student body, offering a lasting resource for learning, creativity, and imagination. As Ms. Elisa Riodiquie shared her heartfelt gratitude, it was clear that this was more than an event—it was the start of a lasting impact.
In launching this library, MERCYworldwide took one more step in imitating Jesus by meeting real needs through meaningful action—and in doing so, God was glorified.
Building on that momentum, MERCY Ambassadors launched their second school library at Trinidad Tecson Elementary School in Sampaloc, Manila, on June 21, 2025.
The school, led by Principal Dr. Judy M. Sampang, serves 763 pupils, ages 5 to 12, many of whom face significant barriers to education. Yet amid hardship, the excitement was electric. With the help of Ma’am Tiboso, the school now holds regular library periods per grade, and the MERCY Reading Corner has become a beloved place where children gather eagerly for storytelling, reading, and connection.
During the launch event, 100 children received school supplies, and the ripple of joy spread across the entire campus. The new library now benefits all 750+ students, nurturing literacy, imagination, and hope for a better future.
In one of Manila’s most marginalized communities, MERCY Libraries are doing more than promoting education—they are creating sanctuaries of possibility, dignity, and love.
Why These Libraries Matter
Safe Havens in the City: In areas where resources are scarce, MERCY Libraries offer clean, peaceful, and inspiring spaces where children can focus, learn, and dream.
Local Leaders Rising: Teachers like Ma’am Tiboso, principals like Dr. Sampang, and Ms. Riodiquie are helping to cultivate a culture of reading and growth.
Healing Through Literacy: In both schools, storytelling has become more than fun, it’s become a way for children to process their struggles and rediscover joy.
These libraries are not just rooms filled with books, they are beacons of hope, built by the hands and hearts of Ambassadors determined to imitate Christ through service. As MERCYworldwide continues to expand these life-giving spaces, one thing remains clear:
“The Word became flesh”
not just in message, but in action, and in Tondo, Manila, God is glorified through every page turned and every child lifted.
