MERCY H2O FOR HAITI – PHASE ONE
Haiti is one of the most water-stressed country in the world. Since their 7.0 magnitude earthquake in January 2010, Haiti’s water system has become contaminated.
There are 3.4 million people in Haiti still without clean, safe drinking water.
Contaminated water is one of the leading causes of childhood illness and the very high infant death rate in Haiti (57 for every 1000 births).
Waterborne illnesses, such as typhoid, cholera, and chronic diarrhea, are the cause of more than half of the deaths in Haiti every year.
MERCYWORLDWIDE has an aggressive plan to provide a basic human need — clean drinkable water — in each Haitian household participating in MERCY H2O for Haiti Program 2016.
In partnership with Vestergaard, a global public health company based in Switzerland, MERCY has started a successful water filtration pilot program in Haiti early 2015.
Lifestraw 1.0 Family filtration systems were given to each participating household of the program. This filtration system converts contaminated water into pure and safe drinking water.
